Why SSL matters for SEO
HTTPS is not a growth lever. It is a floor, and a site sitting below it loses ground in four separate places at once, none of which show up as a ranking penalty you can point at.
A stated, lightweight ranking signal
Google announced HTTPS as a ranking signal in 2014 and has described it ever since as a tie-breaker rather than a lever. We will not tell you a certificate outranks better content, because it does not. What does a paid certificate give me that the free one does not?
Not stronger encryption: the cipher suite and key strength are the same, and a visitor sees the same padlock either way. An organization-validated certificate additionally names your registered company inside the certificate, and an extended-validation certificate is issued only after the strictest check of that company's legal existence. Do I need a dedicated IP address to run HTTPS?
Strictly speaking, no. Server Name Indication lets many certificates share a single address, and that is how most shared hosting works.
